Notes from the Colonel

By: Mr. Couch

The end of our second marking period was November 5. We were extremely proud of our students who made the academic achievement list from the first six weeks.

We have completed several special activities since school started. Homecoming, the Fall Festival, the Book Fair, the Miss Wardlaw Pageant, FCA trips, community support activities, and several field trips have added to the academic program of the school. We will continue to round out our academic program with extra-curricular activities that benefit our students.

The fall sports season is winding down. Congratulations to the Lady Patriots Volleyball team for winning the SCISA Class A Championship. The JV Football team had a very successful season and the Varsity Football team is in the middle of the state playoffs. We have truly been blessed with the start of our sports year. Of course, we must remember that our school’s primary purpose is academic achievement, although athletics play an important role.

We continue to receive strong support from many committees, clubs, and organizations. They can always use extra help. If you are interested in assisting any group, just contact the office for details.

I would ask all drivers, especially during lower school pickup, to be very diligent passing through the parking lot. We dismiss the Lower School ten minutes early to reduce traffic congestions. We have two pickup lines through the parking lot. If you need to talk to someone please park in one of the spaces and not block the traffic flow. It will take all to insure we have a safe school.

Winning Ways

By: Evan Bell

Varsity Football

Varsity football has kept their winning streak up with 22 straight wins. They are currently undefeated with a record of 9-0. They had an impressive win against The Kings with a score of 50-6. The Kings had held the Patriots the first half of the very first game, but this time the Patriots crushed them. The Patriots then went on to defeat JDA in the playoffs. They won 64-12. The State Championship game will be held tonight, November 13, at Calhoun Academy in St. Matthews, S.C. They will be playing against Patrick Henry, who gave the Patriots the best game of the season. Good luck with tonight’s game and bring home another state championship!

Varsity Volleyball

The varsity volleyball team won State this season for the third time in a row. They finished with a record of 19-2. They worked very hard to accomplish this “3-peat” of State Championships.  They went through the state tourney only losing one game to Coastal Christian. In the end of the tournament, they met up with Coastal again to defeat them and bring home another state championship trophy!

J.V. Cheerleading

The junior varsity cheerleaders supported their football players this year by traveling to each game with them to cheer them on. They provided them with spirited banners. They were coached by Belinda Miller.

Varsity Cheerleading

The varsity cheerleading squad has done a great job supporting the football team this year. They have done an outstanding job with all the pep rallies and have made them fun for the whole school. Cupcakes during break every Friday have been provided for the team. The cheerleading team also painted all the banners that the football team runs through during games. Thanks go out from the football team for all the support they give every Friday night.

Special Events

                By: Harrison Courtney

The world geography class at Wardlaw recently had “World Cuisine Day”. Each student had to pick a country at the beginning of the year and will be required to do projects on  their country throughout the year. Over  past week each student had to prepare a food from that country and serve it to the class. The project was also a competition  between the male and female students.

On Sunday afternoon, October fourth, friends, colleagues, and family all gathered in honor of Coach Hubert Morris. Everyone enjoyed desserts and each others company, while reminiscing on their past with Coach Morris. There were several speakers at the event, including Dr. Randy Bryan, Mr. Josh Herlong, Mr. Craig Engle, and the present head football coach,  Mr. Chalmers Carr. Mr. Gerald Doolittle filled everyone in on all of Coach Morris’s outstanding stats. The program concluded with a special moments video. This past week at the homecoming football game the football field was renamed as, “Hubert Morris Field”, in honor of Coach Morris.

The sixth grade world history class has been studying Olympian gods and goddesses. Each student chose a god or goddess and had to dress like that person for a class project. Some of the gods and goddesses chosen were Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, and Athena.

The seventh grade world history class had college week. Each student chose a college and had to make a presentation to present to the class. The seventh grade also celebrated a famous South Carolinian, a few weeks ago. Each student chose a

The seventh grade world history class had college week. Each student chose a college and had to make a presentation to present to the class. The seventh grade also celebrated a famous South Carolinian, a few weeks ago. Each student chose a famous South Carolinian from a list composed by the teacher Teddy Weeks. The person could be dead and if possible come and speak to the class. All walks of life were chosen.

As we move forward through this year, we already have made so many memories. Now as we are in our third six weeks and we look forward to the upcoming holidays. Just remember do not get too carried away and forget about the work. All of the new students are fitting in very well and say that they are glad they decided to come here and join our Wardlaw family. I can’t wait to see how much they blend in as the year progresses

Notes from the Headmaster

By: Mr. Couch

Welcome back for this year of studies, at Wardlaw, as we celebrate our 40th year of operation. As you can see, much work has been done to prepare the school for this year. We have installed new covers over the walk ways between the gym and upper school and the lower school and the parking lot. All wood on both school buildings has been covered with vinyl. The kitchen has been renovated and new lights and new blinds have been installed in the canteen. School hallways have new lights and new ceiling tiles. Without your support, through the labor and contributions to our Development Fund, we could not have accomplished so much.

I firmly believe that if we are going to be successful in the education of our students, it has to be a cooperative effort among parents, students, and the faculty and staff. We are always available to discuss all issues. The only way to solve problems is to discuss them. While the school cannot approve each request, we will make the best decision possible for the overall operation of the institution.

Throughout the year the school participates in a number of fund raisers. These events are scheduled so that the receipts can be used to offset tuition. Please do all you can do to support these projects.

Let’s work together to make this our best year.

Interview with Mr. Bailey

            By: Brittney Faust

“How is Wardlaw different from other places you’ve worked?”

Mr. Bailey: The students have a lot more respect for authority, and they are eager to learn. The parents of the community are interested in the success of the school. Even the high school students communicate well with adults in the community, and the children have goals.

“Do you enjoy teaching the 5th grade?”

Mr. Bailey: I certainly do. I taught the 5th grade for 30 years before I retired.

“Where are you from?”

Mr. Bailey: I grew up in Staten Island, New York. I went to graduate school at the University of South Carolina and had family in Aiken, South Carolina.

“What made you want to come to Wardlaw?”

Mr. Bailey: I heard it was a great school, and I met Mr. Couch and liked what he said about the students and the community. I thought it was a great opportunity.

“Do you have any children?”

Mr. Bailey: Yes, I have two named Jamie and Jessica. Jessica is a nurse practitioner in New York, and Jamie, my son, lives in North Carolina.

Happenings

By: Zachary Snipes

First grade is off to a great start! They have reviewed and have gotten into work full force. Between reading many new words, learning math addition facts, and studying all about different habitats, they’ve kept busy!

The second grade has saved up enough tickets to watch “The Incredibles” at the end of the six weeks.

The third grade has learned all of the books in the Bible, both Old and New Testament.

The fourth grade class explored Hitchcock Woods , the largest urban forest in the United States, under the direction of the Ruth Patrick Science

Education Center of USC-Aiken. The two hour morning hike took the students through the forest, exploring pond life, decaying plants, types of trees and plants, and so much more. It was a wonderful “hands on” experience.

The fifth grade learned how to create story maps and organize their thoughts.
